As a wellness-focused traveler, I found the design to be exceptional—the sound of running water and the periodic mist from the ceiling create a stunning, atmospheric retreat. It is one of the most effective "destination" spas I have experienced in Japan. Exclusive Opportunities One of the best reasons to stay here is the access to private experiences. They offer a private, before-hours tour of Kiyomizu-dera, which is an incredible way to see one of the world's most crowded sites in total peace. These sell out quickly and are quite expensive, but for an immersive experience without the crowds, they are worth it. I also highly recommend the on-site tea ceremony for those curious about traditional Japanese culture. Location The location is unbeatable for history buffs, sitting right across from Nijo Castle. The neighborhood is quiet, safe, and prestigious. While the famous Nishiki Market is nearby, the hotel itself feels like a secluded oasis away from the city's hustle. Verdict The Mitsui Kyoto has earned its three Michelin keys through impeccable service and a deep respect for heritage. It is a high-investment stay, but the level of privacy and the quality of the wellness facilities make it a standout in a city full of luxury options.

I stayed at this extraordinary property last month while traveling through Japan for the first time. The experience exceeded my expectations in every possible way. Felt like a dream! The check-in process was seamless and genuinely delightful. Without a doubt, this was the best check-in experience of my life. We were welcomed in the lounge and we also enjoyed the traditional tea ceremony shortly after which made us feel immersed in Japanese culture and truly at home. The location is absolutely stunning, but what truly sets this hotel apart is its exceptional staff. I also had the pleasure of meeting the Front Office Manager, whom I must sincerely congratulate for building such an outstanding team. The Concierge team was equally remarkable and assisted us effortlessly with a restaurant reservation, enhancing our overall experience even further. Special recognition goes to Sono Masuda, who is undoubtedly the best manager that any employee could wish for. Having worked within The Luxury Collection myself, I can confidently say that I wish I had received training and service standards of this caliber. I cannot express my gratitude enough for such a memorable stay and experience Kyoto but especially The Mitsui are already at the top of my wishlist for a future return.

Exceptional stay. We stayed at Hotel The Mitsui two years ago and chose to return this time to celebrate our honeymoon—and it was absolutely the right decision. What stood out the most was the traditional Japanese hospitality. Every staff member greeted us with a warm smile, even late at night. You can truly feel how much they love what they do—it feels less like a hotel and more like being cared for by family. The level of proactiveness was remarkable. Before we even asked, everything was already thoughtfully prepared. After calling for bottled water on our first day, we noticed that each following day our room had several times more water placed by the bed, in the living area, and throughout the room. At breakfast, whenever we stepped away briefly, our used plates were always quietly cleared by the time we returned. When we were leaving the hotel with a taxi reservation, the front desk already had our bill prepared and ready for signature the moment I arrived downstairs. A special thank you to the rooms team for arranging the hotel’s only room with a terrace despite very limited availability that night—it made our honeymoon truly special and unforgettable. Lastly, a few personal highlights: the fried chicken burger is hands down the best I’ve ever had, and the spa remains my favorite—I fall asleep every single time. We will absolutely be back.
